Ito Takamichi - Kinetic Sculptures
2nd. Jun. - 3rd. Aug. 2007

For Ito Takamichi, engaged in making works of art with a rotational motion, the speed of rotation of a work is the element of important expression. Although the speed of his work is changed in speed by the size of a work, its form, and its placement, the everyday tempo of people has been the basic standard speed in his work. Numbers of rotations, such as four or five rotations per minute, rest easily in his mind. In other words, the basic tempo is much the same as walking slowly and equal to the slowest speed at which we feel a motion as a motion. It is a feature of his work that one does not sense the sound of movement. Furthermore, each work also makes a new sound imagined in the form by motion. Ito Takamichi was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan in 1939. He graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. His works were collected by The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura&Hayama, Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Modern Art, Toyama, The Hakone Open-Air Museum, Sapporo Art Park, Shimane Art Museum, etc. He was appointed professor of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (TNUFAM) in 1993, and became Vice-President of TNUFAM in 2001. He has been the president of Japan Environmental Art Society. Now, he served as the honorary adviser of TNUFAM.
